Rs. 3,300 Crore worth of Assam Tea Sold at Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC)

GUWAHATI: During the fiscal year 2022-2023, Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC) auctioned Assam tea valued at approximately Rs 3300 crore. According to Guwahati Tea Auction Centre data, around 165 million kg of tea was sold at the tea auction centre in 2022-23, with an average price of Rs 191.26 per kg.

According to reports, Dinesh Bihani, Secretary of the Guwahati Tea Auction Buyer’s Association (GTABA) said that “Around 165 million kg of tea worth around Rs 3300 crore sold at the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre in 2022-23. The auction average price has increased upto Rs 8.10 per kg this time compared to the previous year,"

Bihani also said, “An orthodox tea was auctioned at the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre at a price of around Rs. 5,100/-“

Dinesh Bihani further added, “In the past two-three years, exporters’ demands have increased towards the auction. We hope that more tea will be sold at the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre in this financial year.”

On the other hand, according to the report, 204.94 million kg of tea were sold at the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre in 2019-20, with an average price of Rs 139.65 per kg.

In the year 2022, a special tea from Dibrugarh, Assam was sold for Rs. 1.15 lakh per kg at a private auction on December 16.

The price was paid for 'Manohari Gold Tea' at an auction which was the highest sum ever paid for tea at an auction. Tea from the Manohari brand, particularly its gold variation, had consistently fetched high prices at the GTAC, setting new records in the process.

Manohari Gold sold for Rs 99,999 per kilogramme at GTAC in December 2021, which was equalled by the 'Golden Pearl' of AFT Techno Trade, which also sold at the same auction house in February 2022.

Earlier in June 2022, an auction venue in Jorhat sold Pabhojan Gold Tea, a rare variety of organic tea from Assam's Golaghat region, for a stunning Rs 1 lakh per kilogramme, the highest in 2022. According to a Jorhat Tea Auction Centre (JTAC) source, Esah Tea, an Assam-based tea brand, purchased the tea sold by Pabhojan Organic Tea Estate.
