Notably, such cases of taking bribes in Assam have been rising on daily basis, however, the state police is too keep an eye on such government officials.
Recently, a female government worker working as a senior assistant for the Department of Welfare of Plain Tribes and Backward Classes named Seeama Devi was caught red-handed taking a bribe of Rs 4,000 inside the Assam Secretariat campus.
The team also recovered Rs 99,000 in cash from her purse, in addition to the bribe money.
On 3 January 2022, Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam Chief Minister in a key meeting with all the SPs of the state had emphasized ensuring transparency and warned police officers against being too lenient on criminals.
Sarma also stated unequivocally that corruption and alleged public harassment in police stations will not be tolerated.
While the Assam Police Department has produced excellent results in the last six months, Chief Minister Sarma believes the department still needs to improve its investigation methods while dealing with offenders.
Last Year, two staff of the treasury office in Assam Nagaon district were also arrested for allegedly accepting bribes.
