LAKHIMPUR: Along with the rest of the nation, the members and supporters of the Congress Party initiated ‘Sankalp Satyagrah’ agitation in Lakhimpur district on Sunday to protest against the disqualification of their leader Rahul Gandhi as Lok Sabha MP following his conviction in a defamation case by a Surat court. Notably, Rahul Gandhi was sentenced to two years in jail on Thursday in a criminal defamation case over his Modi surname and thieves remark, made by him while addressing a rally at Kolar in Karnataka ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. His disqualification notice was issued by the Lok Sabha Secretariat a day later.
In support of Rahul Gandhi, the Lakhimpur District Congress Committee (LDCC) initiated the demonstration at Gandhi Maidan of North Lakhimpur town. Former Congress MLA Ghana Burhagohain, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee general secretary Padma Losan Doley, LDCC president Gagan Chandra Borah, senior spokesman Prasanta Gogoi, general secretary (administrative) Gangajyoti Tayegam, the office bearers of the Youth Congress, Mahila Congress and other brother-sister wings of the political party took part in the demonstration along with over 200 Congress members. Padma Losan Doley, Gagan Chandra Borah, Prasanta Gogoi, Gangajyoti Tayegam criticized the BJP-led government at the Centre with strong terms for disqualifying Rahul Gandhi as Lok Sabha MP and allegedly maligning the democratic values in the nation.
