GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Tuesday took part in the fifth foundation day programme of Majuli district which was held at Majuli College playground at Dariapar, Majuli. Speaking as the chief guest, Sonowal stated that September 8 is historic day for the people of Majuli as it was on this day in 2016, the present Sate government had declared Majuli as a district only after three months of assuming power.

He said that during the last four years Majuli has witnessed tremendous development and urged the people of Majuli to make the island district one of the most pristine and beautiful places in the world. In today's programme, the Chief Minister laid the foundation stone and inaugurated a total of 329 schemes under various departments worth Rs 120.70 crore.

Saying that only because of the love and affection of the people of Majuli, he got the opportunity to serve as the Chief Minister of the State, Sonowal underlined the need to change the perception of Majuli being a flood ravaged underdeveloped place through harnessing of latent potential of the river island. He called on the people of Majuli, cutting across all age groups, to take pledge on the foundation day to achieve success at the world stage through hard work and dedication.

Urging the people to keep a strict watch over the implementation of ambitious 'Arunudoy' scheme to be launched by state government on October 2, Sonowal said that scheme is envisaged as a tool for women empowerment following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision. He also called on the people not to fall prey to the designs of those with the intention of creating divide and unrest in the society.

In today's programme, Sonowal paid floral tributes at the portrait of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika on the occasion of late maestro's birth anniversary and said that Dr Hazarika sang songs of humanity and brotherhood inspired by the Srimanta Sankardeva's teachings.

Noteworthy that Chief Minister Sonowal today inaugurated altogether 146 schemes worth Rs. 52.70 crore. He also laid foundation stones for 183 schemes to be implemented with an expenditure of Rs. 68 crore by various departments in the district. The Chief Minister also distributed cheques to around 205 beneficiaries under Sericulture department for self-employment and five beneficiaries under sub-divisional welfare schemes for procurement of sewing and DTP machines. Sonowal also released a souvenir on the occasion that highlights the development journey of the district during last four years.

While Majuli DC Bikram Kairi delivered the welcome speech, the programme was also addressed by Minister of State (i/c) for Tea Tribes Welfare Sanjay Kishan, Lakhimpur MP Pradan Baruah and MLAs Ranuj Pegu and Bimal Bora.

CEM of Deuri Autonomous Council Madhab Deuri, Member Secretary of SLAC for Sports & Youth Welfare Lakhya Konwar, Chairperson of Majuli Zila Parishad Papu Dutta Saikia, Commissioner of P&RD Hemen Das, Majuli SP Aparna Natarajan and host of other dignitaries as well public attended the programme. Xatradhikars of several Xatras of Majuli were also present in the programme, stated a press release.
