Satradhikar and eminent scholar Narayan Chandra Goswami passes away at 80

Guwahati: Narayan Chandra Goswami, the venerable sattradhikar of Majuli's Notun Kamalabari Sattra passed away in Guwahati, Assam, in the early morning hours of Tuesday (August 11). He was 80.

Goswami was reportedly suffering from liver cirrhosis and was admitted to the Nemcare Hospital in the city's Bhangagarh locality.

Goswami had been keeping unwell for a long time. He was admitted to a Guwahati city hospital on December 5, 2019, and then with the support from the State Government he was shifted to Gangaram Hospital, New Delhi on December 17. He was released later that month.

However, his condition continued to deteriorate over the ensuing months, and he finally breathed his last earlier today at the Nemcare hospital where he had been admitted recently.

Narayan Chandra Goswami was a leading Vaishnavite saint and was also noted for his proficiency in the Sanskrit language.

The saint was known for his work on the Brajawali language and neo-Vaishnavite traditions and Sattriya culture.

The saint has been lauded across the state for his noteworthy contributions in his chosen discipline. e was conferred the honorary Doctor of Literature (D Lit) degree by Dibrugarh University in 2010 and has been honored with several awards and accolades and was a recipient of Srimanta Shankardev Bota and Shankardev Shilpi Sadhana Bota.

In a lengthy career, he has written, edited, and translated over twenty books. The Satradhikar has translated into Assamese the original Ramayana authored by Balmiki from Sanskrit. He has 20 books, including the translated ones, to his credit.

Goswami has edited the Kirtan Ghosa and Naam Ghosa, Ankiya plays, Borgeets of Srimanta Sankaradeva and his apostle Madhavadeva, among several others.
