'Say No To Ragging': Assam CM After Dibrugarh University Student Jumps Off Hostel Building

DIBRUGARH: Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, has urged students to say no to ragging in the wake of a terrible event at Dibrugarh University in which a student tried to commit suicide by jumping off the hostel building.

CM Sarma stated on the microblogging platform Twitter, "It has come to notice that a Dibrugarh University student is hurt in an alleged case of ragging.

Close watch maintained & followup action coordinated with district admn. Efforts on to nab the accused, victim being provided medical care.

Appeal to students, say NO to Ragging," the tweet read of CM Sarma.

The chief minister of Assam strongly urged students to stop ragging as the news of a student at Dibrugarh University allegedly jumping on Saturday night from the second floor of the university dormitory building came to light.

The reason behind the incident is the level of harassment done by the senior students to the victim.

The event happened on Sunday. Anand Sharma, the victim, leaped off the second story of his dormitory to escape what he believed to be senior-level ragging.

The student suffered serious injuries and was taken to a private hospital where he was put into the intensive care unit. The guy is still in serious condition as of right now.

The victim's family has officially reported the incident to the police. Authorities have also declared that an inquiry has been opened and that they would pursue the fugitive offenders with vigour.

Vice Chancellor of Dibrugarh University Dr. Jiten Hazarika stated, "We are investigating the matter and will take strict action against the culprits."

In the meantime, police in Assam's Dibrugarh district have detained three additional people and arrested one person in connection with the case.

The Dibrugarh SP told the reporters that the student's parents, Anand Sharma, had submitted a complaint alleging ragging by five persons in a university hostel.

Niranjan Thakur, the accused, was then taken into custody, and three other people were put in detention, the SP continued. He declared, "The injured victim's condition is stable."
