Science writer Amiya Rajbonshi to receive national award

LAKHIMPUR: A noted science writer of the State, Dr. Amiya Rajbonshi, who hails from Lakhimpur district, has been selected for the prestigious 'National Award for Outstanding Efforts in Science & Technology Communication' through print media, including books and magazine, for the year of 2019. The award is co-ordinated by the National Council for Science & Technology Communication (NCSTC) Division of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Ministry of Science and Technology under Government of India. Regarding the selection, Dr. Akhilesh Gupta, Adviser and Head of NCSTC of DST, has sent a letter of intimation to Dr Rajbonshi.

The award consists of a cash prize of Rs 2,00,000, a memento and a citation which will be presented to her during an award distribution function to be held as a part of National Science Day celebration on February 28 in New Delhi. As per the source of NCSTC, the National Science Day is proposed to be celebrated in a grand manner and the main function of the event is being planned in Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi. Besides this, a special talk on the theme of the NSD by an eminent scientist and national roundtable discussion will also be organized. In this function, Dr Rajbonshi will receive the prestigious award.

Notably, Dr. Amiya Rajbonshi, who has made tremendous contribution to the intellectual field of the State with her unique science articles, retired from North Lakhimpur College (Autonomous) as Vice-Principal. She graduated from Cotton College in Zoology with first class first in 1968 and got postgraduate degree from Gauhati University in 1970 securing gold medal. Though she started research in the Department of Genetics in Osmania University in Hyderabad, she later achieved her PhD degree from Gauhati University in 2006.

While rendering her service as Professor of Zoology in North Lakhimpur College (Autonomous), she was invited to present her thesis at Singapore National University in 1987 and Durban Westville University of South Africa. She participated at a workshop in Singapore National University titled 'Optimization of Environmental Problems'. Two of her translated books named Reaching Womanhood (2006) and Prevention to Burn (2007) were published by National Book Trust of India while another book, Pranir Bibartan was published by Asom Prakashan Parishad in 2008. In addition to them, she has authored more than eight books on science and published a good number of science articles in several science and other popular magazines of the State along with various newspapers.

At present, Dr Rajbonshi, who is the former president of Assam Science Writers' Association, has been rendering her service to the education sector of the State as the Rector of Genius Academy, North Lakhimpur. Many organizations and individuals of the State as well as Lakhimpur district have congratulated for her glorious success.
