DOOMDOOMA: Tension prevailed in a village in Doomdooma of the Tinsukia District of the state after an alleged drugs peddler attacked members of the village protection committee in the region. The villagers registered a complaint against the incident on Tuesday and demanded the immediate arrest and strict punishment of the perpetrators.

The incident reportedly took place in the Hahkhati Village. An awareness camp was organised regarding narcotics and child marriage in the village on Monday. At around 10 PM, after the event was over, suspected narcotics peddler Dilip Puri engaged in a fight with the secretary of the village defense committee of the Hahkhati village, Biplab Sharma.

The president of the committee Thir Bahadur Chetry mentioned that two suspects (one male and one female) were seen entering the house of suspected drugs peddler Kumar Bhandari. Following which, some members of the village protection committee including Biplab Sharma and Subhash Chandra Rai went ahead to investigate the matter. While Kumar Bhandari was able to flee from the scene, the committee members were able to apprehend the suspected man and the woman. And that is when Dilip Puri attacked the members, making way for them to escape from the committee members.

Nayak Subhash Chandra Rai sustained minor injuries including bruises on his neck and hand during this fight. The suspects were identified as Rani Chetry and Ajay Thakur and are said to have good contacts with the narcotics peddlers of neighboring Arunachal Pradesh. And a complaint was registered against Dilip Puri and Kumar Bhandari by the villagers after the incident.

It is important to note that Dilip Puri was previously convicted for his involvement in narcotics trade and had recently served three months in jail. Villagers informed that he got back into the same line of work after serving his sentence and created problems for them.
