DIBRUGARH: Security has been tightened across all upper Assam districts including Dibrugarh with the ULFA (Independent) calling for a total boycott of the Independence Day celebration and observance of a general strike on August 15. Night patrolling and naka checking has been going on in important places of Dibrugarh. Security forces are working day and night to thwart any kind of eventualities.

Last year the militant outfit had abstained from the boycott call of the Independence Day celebrations. Vital installations of the district including oil and gas pipelines, railway tracks, railway stations, markets and public places have been kept under close watch while police barriers have come up in entry and exit points of the town. Intensive checking drives were being carried out on all private and commercial vehicles and two-wheelers.

"We're taking every possible security measures to counter any threat. We've also intensified random frisking and checking of vehicles and two-wheelers at all entry points of the district towns with the aid of paramilitary forces.

Apart from regular naka checking, intensive patrolling is being carried out on the highway, roads, railway tracks, bridges and river embankments," a senior police official said.

Security has been tightened at the Bogibeel bridge, Dibrugarh airport, railway station, radio station, oil and gas terminals as well as transmission towers and industrial units which may be likely targets for the outfit.
