TEZPUR: District Magistrate Ankur Bharali, via an official order issued on July 10, directed the immediate closure of the road from Lachit Chowk via Jail road to Tezpur College for entry by the general public, until further notice.
The order has been issued in partial modification of the earlier prohibitory order dated May 15, 2024, in light of serious security threats highlighted by the Superintendent of Central Jail, Tezpur. A recent theft incident at the government residence of the Jailor, located opposite the main gate of the central jail during peak hours on June 30 underscored the vulnerability of the area due to unrestricted public movement.
The jail authorities emphasized that unregulated access by unidentified vehicles and individuals posed a critical threat to the safety of the jail staff, inmates, and overall security of the premises.
With the construction of the alternate bridge now completed and opened to traffic, the closure of this road was deemed necessary to ensure the safety and integrity of the central jail and its surroundings. Commuters have been advised to use alternative routes, such as the newly-constructed bridge and adjoining roads.
All concerned authorities were instructed to strictly enforce this order and implement appropriate barricading and signage for effective traffic diversion.
The district administration sought the cooperation of the public and stakeholders in implementing this measure in the interest of public and institutional safety.
