Security deposit money scam: Executive Engineer of erstwhile Tangla Irrigation Division surrenders

TANGLA: The Executive Engineer of erstwhile Tangla Irrigation Division, Satyaram Kalita, who was on the run for nearly six months, surrendered before the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Court here in Udalguri on Monday.

According to reports, he was the prime accused in connection with Tangla PS Case No. 179/2021 under Sections 406/409/420/34 of the IPC wherein there were anomalies in release of security deposit money to contractors which were disproportionate to their genuine amount and total of Rs. 4,03,49,184 was released as Security Deposits by the Executive Engineer who credited excess amount to the bank account of 27 contractors.

A police officer privy to the investigation said, "The investigation reveals that the aforesaid proposals were made inserting new amounts, cash book numbers, bill numbers, false voucher numbers and altering the value of the actually deposited amount of money etc."

After there were media reports on the anomalies, an RTI activist, Pankaj Asomia lodged an FIR against the Executive Engineer, Satyaram Kalita, Deputy Accountant of the division, Prabhat Kalita and the then Superintending Engineer, Kokrajhar Circle (Irrigation)-cum-Council Head of the Department (CHD), BTC, Mrigen Boro, with Tangla Police. While Deputy Accountant Prabhat Kalita has already been arrested in the case, the Gauhati High Court has granted anticipatory bail to Superintending Engineer, Kokrajhar Circle (Irrigation)-cum-Council Head of the Department (CHD), BTC, Mrigen Boro.
