SILCHAR: Cachar and Karimganj administrations' continuous campaigns against and raids on probable hideouts of smugglers with their drug cartels as a part of ongoing state wide action plan have begun to yield results. This has been the demand of all sections of people across the valley as the youths have been its worst victims. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma from the day he assumed office has directed the DCs and SPs to act decisively and firmly to eliminate the menace of social evil.

The new SP of Karimganj, Padmanabh Barua, after his joining, has declared war against the couriers and harbourers of all sorts of narcotics and contraband goods in the district. On the basis of intelligence inputs, a joint raid by Karimganj and Patharkandi police was conducted at the house of Rakib Uddin located at Panighat near Aschimganj village. YABA tablets valued at Rs 50 lakh were seized from the house. Five persons including a woman were taken into custody. It was from his house that the mastermind Nasir Uddin was also arrested.

Irked by police action, some youths identified as Abdul Kadir, Saifulla and Abdullah and a woman tried to attack the police team as they were returning with the accused persons and the contraband goods. All were arrested. The SP after interrogation would gather information from them about their network and the counter measures to be adopted.

Yet in another action by a team led by SDPO Lakhipur KP Bhattacharjee, OC Jirighat and Udharbond police stations' personnel carried out raid and search in the house of Subhash Nunia of Thaligram Basti in Cachar district and recovered 81.24 kgs of suspected cannabis from there. Also involved in this shady business was Pradeep Pashi. Both were arrested and legal action under relevant provisions of Narcotics Prevention Act is being drawn against them. Both these raids were carried out during the last 48 hours.
