GUWAHATI: Security arrangements have been tightened in and around Dibrugarh Central Jail, which include deployment of Assam Police commandos, to foil any possible security breach by the close aides of Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh, among others.

The Dibrugarh jail, built in 1859-60, is the oldest jail in the northeast and was used to keep many top leaders of United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (Ulfa-I) during the peak of militancy in the state. Dibrugarh Central Jail is the most secure prison in the state, according to the police.

IGP (law and order) Prashant Kumar Bhuyan on Monday took stock of the security arrangements at the jail in where six close aides of the pro-Khalistan outfit leader Amritpal are lodged. They have been brought from Punjab amidst tight security. Four aides of Amritpal — Daljit Singh Kalsi, Bhagawant Singh, Gurmeet Singh and Pradhanmatri Bajeka — were brought to Dibrugarh jail by a team of 27 Punjab police personnel, including the IG prison, by a special Air Force aircraft on Sunday morning.

Sources in the Assam Police said the jail is most secured due to which Amritpal’s aides have been lodged here. There is, however, no case registered against the group in the state.

On Tuesday morning, absconding Waris Punjab De leader Amritpal Singh’s uncle Harjit Singh was brought to the Dibrugarh Central Jail from Guwahati, after being flown in from Punjab.

Harjit is considered the brain behind the meteoric rise of Amritpal. He was brought to Dibrugarh from Guwahati by road under heavy security cover.

Earlier, a special flight carrying a team of Punjab Police accompanying Harjit landed at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBI) in Guwahati at 8.40pm on Monday. From the airport, he was brought to the Dibrugarh Central Jail by road covering a distance of 458 km.

A convoy of 7 police vehicles along with the separatist leader reached the Dibrugarh Central Jail at 7.10 am on Tuesday. According to sources, the special flight bringing Harjit was initially supposed to land at the Dibrugarh Airport on Monday evening but bad weather conditions forced the plane to be diverted to Guwahati., Booked under the National Security Act (NSA), Harijit had earlier surrendered before the Punjab Police amid the ongoing crackdown against Waris Punjab De activists. As per reports, Harjit was involved in the transport business in the UK and Canada, but joined his nephew, Amritpal, after he came to India in August 2022. Harjit is also known to have played the role of manager and was in charge of Amritpal’s finances, reports indicated.
