SILCHAR: Amid massive ethnic clashes and retaliatory attack by security forces in Manipur, Cachar police had intensified vigil in Lakhipur constituency in Cachar which shares border with the terror-struck neighbouring state. Cachar SP Nomal Mahatta said, they were constantly monitoring the situation.

Thousands of people, mostly Hmar, Kuki and Mizo, crossed border and took shelter in Marqulin area in Lakhipur after the ethnic clash broke out in Manipur. The refugees had been housed in various schools in Lakhipur.

Meanwhile, Joint Action Committee for Safeguard of Indigenous Manipuri People of Assam, a Silchar based platform had alleged that the reason behind the ongoing violence in Manipur was the large scale illegal trading of drugs. People belonging to Kuki community were running the drugs syndicate which had direct connection with Myanmar. Further they alleged that a conspiracy had been hatched to form a separate land for Kuki, Hmar, Mizos with some parts of Manipur and Tripura and Mizoram government, led by the Chief Minister Zoramthanga was instigating the move. The Union government should deal with Mizoram with strict hand, the Manipuri body claimed. They further demanded NRC in Manipur to chase out the illegal dwellers who had intruded into Manipur with malicious mission.
