Seminar and Workshop on Charaideo Maidams Organised

SIVASAGAR: Directorate of Archaeology, Government of Assam, under the aegis of Charaideo District Administration, conducted the first day of national seminar-cum-workshop on ‘Integrated Conservation and Comprehensive Management of the Royal Ahom Maidams at Charaideo, Assam: Insights from the National and International Heritage Sites’ at the conference hall of DC’s Office, Charaideo on Saturday. The inaugural session was attended by Debabrata Saikia, MLA, Nazira LAC and Leader of Opposition, Assam Legislative Assembly. Speaking on the occasion as chief guest, Debabrata Saikia thanked the State Government and the Central Government for giving priority to the Charaideo Maidams for being included as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. He also hoped that the recognition as a World Heritage Site would bring immense potential in the tourism sector of Charaideo.

Sivasagar Deputy Commissioner Aditya Vikram Yadav said that it is very promising that the Maidams of Charaideo have been pushed to get their name included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site. He also mentioned that there is a lot to be done in this direction. He said that alongwith improving the overall infrastructure and connectivity of Charaideo, accommodation for tourists should be made and a comprehensive and practical planning will be required for this.

Charaideo Deputy Commissioner Nibedana Das Patowary in his speech said that the national-level seminar organized in the district for the conservation and promotion of the historic Maidams of Charaideo would open up a positive direction. On the occasion, Cultural Expert, State Government, Dr KC Nauriyal presented a brief report on the history and structure of the Maidams, which bear the significance of the golden history of the Ahom kingdom, as well as the studies and research conducted on them. Atrayee Goswami, Joint Secretary to the Government of Assam, Indigenous and Tribal Faith and Culture Department, Janhwij Sharma, ADG, Archaeological Survey of India and other experts and scholars were also present on the occasion. After the inaugural session, papers were presented on myriad topics ranging from archaeo-seismology, conservation approaches adopted in the Maidams, case studies of heritage sites in other countries and ASI’s conservation works abroad.
