JAMUGURIHAT: A seminar on ‘IPR: It’s relevance in the present day society and GI for development of society’ was held at THB College under the initiative of the Research, Innovation and Development Cell and Institution’s Innovation Cell of the college recently. Inaugurating the programme Dr Ajit Hazarika, principal of the college said that attempts have been made by the college towards creation of awareness among the college fraternity about the significance of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) in the present context and the need of obtaining GI for a number of products from the north eastern region.

He said that besides creating something with innovative ideas, it is imperative to protect the products from piracy with measures of the international IPR laws. Speaking on the occasion as a resource person, Dr Ratna Kinkor Goswami, Professor, Crop Physiology, Biswanath Agriculture college discussed at length the dimensions of Intellectual property Rights and Geographical Indication (GI) and told that we have obtained GI tags only for a few products from the area, but we have potentials to obtain many more GI tags for our indigenously produced items from the agricultural products to various popular food items. Dr Prasanta Neog, professor, Agricultural Mateorology, Biswanath Agriculture college also deliberated on the issue and appreciated the initiative of the college towards utilization of the resources of the college for manufacturing honey, green tea etc. with involvement of the students during their free hours. The programme was conducted by Dr Tulsi Upadhya, Asst. Professor, Botany, and Coordinator, Research, Innovation and Development cell of the college.
