KOKRAJHAR: In a major jolt to the BPF, the vice-president of the party, former MLA and political advisor of BPF supremo Hagrama Mohilary - Hemendra Nath Brahma -along with 50 other members on Monday joined the United People's Front Liberal (UPPL) at a function held at the central office of the party, Kokrajhar.

The president of the UPPL, Promod Boro and party advisor UG Brahma felicitated Hemendra Nath Brahma and 50 other members with traditional Aronai and gamosa. The programme was also attended by other senior leaders of the party.

Talking to reporters, senior BPF leader Hemendra Nath Brahma said he had neither enmity with any leader of the party nor personal anger towards anyone. He joined the UPPL as he wished to do so. He said the time had come to work together for comprehensive development of the region in all spheres. He said, "I was inspired to work for the society with the support of the people and became legislator and also worked with the Hagrama Mohilary-led BPF to implement all the clauses of BTC accord but more importantly, the time has come to implement all the clauses of the new BTR accord in letter and spirit." He said he had nothing to say about BPF president Hagrama Mohilary and the party. The focus should be on the smooth implementation of the BTR accord, he said.

Brahma said that many leaders had joined the BJP or some other national party, which according to him was not a good sign for the greater interest of the society. He questioned as to who would look after the local and pertinent issues if all senior leaders left the regional political parties and joined the national parties?

The president of the UPPL, Promod Boro said that most of the people of the BTC region were not happy with the BPF-led administration in the last 17 years and added that now people wanted a change, people wanted to establish a government free from corruption, misrule, nepotism and favouritism. He said the people of the region would witness a new change in the council.

Senior BPF leader Hemendra Nath Brahma who joined the UPPL was the general secretary of Bodoland People's Progressive Front (BPPF) led by Rabiram Narzary but joined the BPF led by Hagrama Mohilary after the 2006 assembly election. In the 2011 assembly election, BPF gave the party ticket to Pradip Kr. Brahma (Jara) for the 29-Kokrajhar West constituency and again in 2016 election, Rabiram Narzary, who was the president of the BPPF, was given party ticket soon after joining the BPF. In the 2021 election, Brahma was likely to be denied ticket for his constituency and this could be the reason behind his sudden decision to switch over to UPPL according to political observers.
