KOKRAJHAR: A senior lecturer of District Institute of Educational Training (DIET), Kokrajhar, Satyendra Basumatary of Thuribari died due to COVID-19 on Wednesday midnight at RN Brahma Civil Hospital here. He leaves behind his wife and a son who is studying at Class XII in Guwahati. He was 58.
Sources from the family said that he tested COVID-19 positive on May 1 along with his wife and they had been in home quarantine since then. He faced uneasiness in breathing and was admitted at RN Brahma Civil Hospital on May 3 in the evening but unfortunately, he breathed his last on Wednesday midnight while his wife is stated to be recovering. Due to certain objection in the village, his body was taken to the cremation ground in Kokrajhar.
Basumatary was a man of sober nature and respected by all. He was the president of Kokrajhar Rifle Shooting Association. He served as the president of South Kokrajhar Primary Bodo Sahitya Sabha (BSS) for two terms and he was interested in sports and associated with sports association. He was also a social worker and a guiding force in his locality. Many people and local villagers expressed deep sorrow over his death.
Meanwhile, the COVID-19 patients are increasing in Kokrajhar. So far six persons have died due to COVID in the district. The district administration has taken up several measures to contain the pandemic and tighten the vigil on violators of COVID protocol.
