BISWANATH CHARIALI: Senior Medical Officer of Majulighur Tea Estate, some 25 kilometres away from here, under Biswanath Chariali police station in Biswanath district, Dr. Basanta Goswami was allegedly attacked in the garden by some miscreants on Wednesday evening. They accused him of being responsible for the closure of shops and markets in the tea garden.

The 81-year old physician was injured in the attack. However, police arrived at the scene and managed to control the situation. Dr Goswami is undergoing treatment at present.

According to Dr Goswami, he was walking in the hospital campus in the evening after completing his duty when he saw a mob coming towards him. Before he could understand the situation, three or four people started to shout, "This is the man, this is the man," while pointing towards him and they allegedly attacked him. He fell on the ground and sustained injuries in his hand and on the back. Dr Goswami, who retired as the Superintendent of Kanaklata Baruah Civil Hospital, Tezpur, has been serving in the tea garden for the last nine years.

The management of the tea garden recently ordered closure of all business establishments following increase in the number of COVID related cases in the garden. An FIR was lodged in the Biswanath Chariali police station on Thursday by Dr Goswami and police have started investigation.

Meanwhile, the Biswanath Chariali branch of Indian Medical Association (IMA) has condemned the attack on Dr Goswami and urged the administration to initiate stern action against those involved in the incident.
