Several antique Ahom-Turkish Dynasty coins recovered in Charaideo District

Sonari: Several antique Ahom-Turkish dynasty coins recovered while digging a pond at Barpathar village of Sonari town under Charaideo district of Assam on Saturday.

The antiques were dug out during the excavation of the pond by the job card holders of Naharpukhuri Panchayat which is one of the beneficiaries of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).

As per eyewitnesses, a pot filled with octagonal coins, belonging to Turkish, Mughal, Ahom and Moran dynasties were recovered and was accordingly informed to the Charaideo district administration to be sent to the archaeological department for further examination.

However, due to “inaction”, the officials could spot only 12 coins of the Ahom-Turkish Dynasties.

Local people are also suspecting that some of the antique octagonal coins were of 1600 AD and were written in both Assamese, Farsi and Turkish languages.

“Several coins were already taken away by the workers so there was barely 12 coins left for the administration,” said a local.
