DIPHU: Several villages in the Koilamati region of Karbi Anglong suffered heavily under a severe hailstorm that took place on Thursday with damages caused to several houses.

Ground reports mentioned that more than 20 villages have been affected by the recent hailstorm. Heavy rains also accompanied the hailstorm, increasing the problems of the local people. The weather disturbance reportedly took place in the morning hours.

One Simeon Phangcho, a resident of the Koilamati region mentioned that “ the incident took place between 9 AM and 10:30 AM, hail stones, accompanied by heavy rain was experienced in the Koilamati area. Roof of several houses as well as important things inside the houses were damaged in the storm.”

Trees including those of betel nuts and bananas, both of which are important cash crops were damaged by the storm. Multiple birds, both domestic and wild, lost their lives in this hailstorm. Infrastructures including the Terenglangso Presbyterian Church and Bethel Presbyterian Church were also affected.

More than 29 families in the Lagtuk Hanse village were also affected by the storm. And the village headmen of all the affected villages were working on the assessment of losses caused by the hailstorm for the team of officials visiting from the Assistant Revenue Officer’s office in Solonijan.

Another heavy hailstorm which lashed Dibrugarh on Monday afternoon had caused extensive damage in 35 villages of Dibrugarh. “A population of 2,961 under 35 villages in four revenue circles of Dibrugarh were affected due to the massive hailstorm which lashed most parts of the Dibrugarh district on Monday,” said an official of ASDMA. He said, “We have distributed 138 tarpaulin sheets to the affected household. Electric lines have been restored which were damaged during the hailstorm.”

According to official figures, 545 kutcha houses were partially damaged, 39 pucca houses were partially damaged and six kutcha houses were fully damaged during the massive hailstorm.
