Sexagenarian Held for Molesting Minor Girl in Silchar

SILCHAR: A 63-year-old man was arrested by police on Monday for allegedly molesting his student at Rongpur in Silchar recently.

A first information report was lodged by the girl's mother with Rongpur police patrol post in connection with the incident. She told the police that the man, who used to teach music to her nine-year-old daughter, molested her in his house after she went for her music classes. The man also threatened the kid against informing about the matter to anyone.

The woman also said the man (accused) had requested her to not approach the police and that he could provide a big amount of money if she agreed to his request.

Sources the man was held by Rongpur police on Monday. He was later produced before a court in Silchar and sent to judicial custody. Another source said a few other students have alleged suffering similar experiences, but there has not been any police complaint lodged.

Barak Valley / Silchar has witnessed a number of cases of alleged molestation in the past few months. A 40-year-old man was arrested by police for allegedly molesting a girl at Dharmanagar Colony at Badarpur in Karimganj district on July 24.

A youth was arrested by police from Karimganj late on June 25 for allegedly molesting his eight-year-old cousin sister at Malugram in Silchar. A man was arrested by police for allegedly trying to molest a child in Karimganj on June 14. In December 2020, a five-year-old girl was allegedly molested by her teacher at Meherpur in Silchar.

In May 2020, a 24-year-old man was arrested by police from Sonai Road for allegedly sexually abusing his student (age around seven years) and recording a pornographic video showing the child being sexually abused. In August 2020, an 81-year-old man was arrested for allegedly molesting a nine-year-old girl at Rongpur.
