GUWAHATI: Assam's darkest phase was marked by a large number of secret killings or 'Gupta Hotya'. Many Assamese people of the day still remember those days and feel the chills down their spines.

Nillaanjan Reata Datta, the 2-time national award winner has decided to debut in the Hindi film industry with a thriller named 'Shadow Assasins' related to these 'gupta hotya' or secret killings. It is due to release in theatres across the country on coming Friday, that is December 9.

It aims to shine the limelight on the dark period of Assamese history when people used to dread a knock on the doors at night. And aims to show the horrors of the people who used to live through those days that cast a long shadow on their lives.

According to the makers of the film, it is based on the facts revealed in the report given by Retd. Justice KN Saikia's Commission into the brutalities. But a writ petition to the Gauhati High Court in the year 2018 led to the declaration of this report as invalid. As the name suggests, the thriller continues to prove that the victims of violence do not receive justice. It reminds the Assamese public of the long remained shadow in the collective conscience of the people of the region about the mysterious killings.

The plot revolves around the life of Nirbhay Kalita, a fictitious character who leaves his home in Guwahati for education in Pune. And how the political winds back home engulf him and his family and send him down a spiral of events that change his life radically.

This film has a very diverse cast and crew from the Hindi, Bengali and Assamese film industries. Anurag Sinha and Mishti Chakravarty are in the lead roles. Rakesh Chaturvedi Om, Hemant Kher, Monuj Borkotoky, and Akash Sinha are in pivotal roles. Several Assamese actors also play very important roles in this film.
