Jorhat: The Smriti Shanti Sadbhavna Yatra in memory of former Assam CM late Tarun Gogoi has begun on Wednesday with a tribute ceremony organized at Kachari Maidam in Jorhat district of Assam to pay tribute to the three-time Assam CM late Tarun Gogoi.

Wife Dolly Gogoi along with the entire family paid tribute (Shradhanjali) to the late leader.

People from all sections of the society came out to pay tribute to their beloved veteran Congress leader in the tribute ceremony.

Assam Congress's general secretary Jitendra Singh along with other Congress leaders, Rekibuddin Ahmed, Abdul Khaleq, Pradyut Bordoloi, Deep Gogoi, Rana Goswami, Devabrat Saikia, and many other senior leaders were present in the program.

Gaurav Gogoi, Lok Sabha MP from Kaliabor and son of Tarun Gogoi is trying to fulfill his father's last wishes through this Smriti Shanti Sadbhavna Yatra. Gogoi wanted to travel all over Assam, which unfortunately he could not do due to his poor health condition, thus Gaurav Gogoi aimed to carry his ashes all over the state to Assam.

The ashes of Gogoi will be immersed in the holy water of Brahmaputra.

The yatra will end at Guwahati on December 12.

Earlier this week addressing media in Guwahati Gaurav Gogoi had said, "This is a yatra for peace, and to carry forward late Tarun Gogoi's aims and dreams for the coordination of Assam. The yatra is being held to let people of Assam once again know about the dreams and aspirations of the late leader, his thoughts, feelings, and what he wanted to do for the people of Assam."

After this yatra, Gogoi's family have decided to organize a memorial lecture in Guwahati on December 23 to mark the completion of a month of the Peoples' Leader's demise where a souvenir too would be released.

The tallest Assam Congress leader passed away on November 23 at 05.34 pm in the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) after fighting against Covid related ailments. And the last rites of the veteran leader of Assam was performed on November 26 at the Navagraha crematorium in Guwahati.
