SI scam: Congress stages protest outside Guwahati police commisioner's office, demands Sonowal to resign as CM

Guwahati: The Assam Congress continued its protests against the Sub Inspector (SI) recruitment scam and staged a protest on Monday (October 5) outside the Police Commissioner's office in Guwahati city. The protesters engaged in sloganeering and demanded the immediate resignation of the Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who must take moral responsibility for the question paper leaks, they said.

Ever since the suspected scam in the recruitment process came to light, the Grand Old Party has been demanding the resignation of Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, proper inquiry into the question paper leak and scam, and stringent punishment for those involved in the alleged scam.

Earlier, Assam Pradesh Congress President Ripun Bora and opposition leader Debabrata Saikia announced that the party would hold protests in front of the office of the Superintendent of Police in all the 33 districts across the state on October 5.

So far, Assam Police has arrested at least 22 people including one of the prime accused, Diban Deka. The other prime accused DIG (retd) PK Dutta is still absconding.

Deka was arrested soon after he surrendered to the police at Pathacharkuchi in Barpeta district late on September 30. Saikia was immediately suspended from the prime membership of the BJP after his arrest.

The SI exam to recruit 597 people had to be cancelled within minutes of starting the exam on September 20 as the question paper was leaked. Around 66,000 candidates were appearing for the exam. Now the exam will be held on November 22.
