Sikkim's Covid-19 graph continues to rise with 14 more cases; total 27

Guwahati: With the number of Covid-19 positive cases skyrocketing upwards across the nation at an unprecedented rate, 14 more persons from the Himalayan state of Sikkim have tested positive for the pathogen, sending the number soaring upwards to 27. Amid a rising Covid-19 graph in India, the number of active Covid-19 positive cases in Sikkim is 24, as 3 patients have already recovered from the respiratory illness.

Sikkim health department's director general-cum-secretary Dr Pempa T Bhutia said that the new patients were in various quarantine centres in the East Sikkim district. He informed that 9 patients were in the Bahai School quarantine facility in Ranipool, 3 in the Epica garden, and 2 in PNG School.

Bhutia further informed that all these patients have been shifted to the STNM hospital's Covid-19 isolation ward for treatment purpose. Meanwhile, the 3 quarantine centres where these latest cases have been declared have been tagged as containment zones by the administration.

It may be recalled here that Sikkim reported its first case of the Coronavirus on Saturday, May 23. The first positive patient from the state is a 25-year-old man who had returned to the state from New Delhi where he was preparing for the UPSC exams. With the return of at least four lakh natives from the south and north India, coronavirus cases in eight north-eastern States have spiked upwards at a dramatic rate.

Meanwhile, India has reported 2,97,535 coronavirus cases so far, data from the Union Health Ministry showed this morning. India now is ranked fourth in the world in terms of coronavirus cases, after the US, Brazil and Russia.

Yesterday, the country recorded over 10,000 new COVID-19 cases in a day for the first time, with 10,956 people testing positive for the deadly virus infection. The death count rose to 8,498 with a record single-day spike of 396 fatalities.
