SILCHAR: A group of people in southern Assam's Hailakandi district faced a terrible mishap during their picnic outing. Sadly, the incident took place on Sunday around 7 pm when they were returning from Son Beel and had an accident due to losing control over their vehicle near the beautiful location. It left seven individuals severely injured among ten to twelve passengers who were there in that vehicle.
Amal Gupta, Prabir Bith, Kalachand Bose, Achinta Ghosh, Niraj Debnath, Rajib Sutradhar and Newton Baramoni were the victims of an accident. They are originally from West Bengal but currently reside in Hailakandi due to employment reasons. The incident occurred approximately 46 km away from Hailakandi town while they were traveling back home from Son Beel.
A team of police officers from the Son Beel Kalibari police outpost arrived at the site shortly after being notified about the accident. They requested ambulances from Ramakrishnanagar (Karimganj district) to transport those injured to Ramakrishnanagar's block primary health center. Once they received initial medical attention, they were moved by authorities to Hailkandi civil hospital for further treatment.
On Sunday afternoon, there was another occurrence where a group of picnickers were travelling to Sindura tea garden near Kalain in Cachar district when their vehicle lost control and deviated off the road leading to disruption about 37 km from Silchar. Even though no significant injuries were reported, many vehicles got stuck on both sides of the road for quite some time.
According to witnesses present at the scene, the driver of the vehicle drove recklessly which resulted in almost overturning. Additionally, they alleged that passengers were dancing carefree which added to the accident. Locals residing near Kalain blamed vehicles traveling towards Sindura tea garden for not following standard operating procedures (SOP) issued by Assam police. The SOP was recently put into effect with an aim to regulate picnic parties and avoid mishaps after a tragic incident in Golaghat district's Balijan led to 12 fatalities.
Concerns were expressed by residents regarding the transportation of picnic-goers to well-liked locations in Katigorah and Kalain regions, citing reckless driving, excessively loud music being played and over-crowding. It was observed that a number of these individuals sat on top of vehicles while dancing without any concern for potential dangers. The community called for frequent police patrols en route to leading picnic spots within the assembly constituency area in Katigorah along with stern actions against anyone breaching Assam Police's SOP measures so as ensure safety regulations are strictly adhered to.
