PATHSALA: Playgrounds, particularly in cities, are now silent places where children used to play football, cricket, and other games. As young people choose to stay indoors and forgo outside sports and games, parents, educators, and health experts are becoming increasingly concerned.

The main reasons behind this change are rising temperatures, increasing air pollution, rapid urban development, and the growing use of smartphones, short videos (reels), and online entertainment.

With more buildings, vehicles, and traffic, places are getting hotter. This rising heat makes playgrounds uncomfortable—and sometimes even unsafe—for children to play. “We used to play for hours after school, but now it’s just too hot. It’s frustrating,” said a student from Pathsala.

Another youth shared, “Earlier, after school, we would come home, rest for a while, and then go to the nearby field with our bat, ball, or football. But today’s generation doesn’t want to go out because of the heat and other reasons.”

Efforts are needed from concerned authorities, parents, schools, and society to bring back outdoor play and help children live healthier lives.
