Sit-in staged against Citizenship Amendment Act at Gandhi Chowk, Doomdooma

DOOMDOOMA: In response to the call by the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) to observe silent prayer and light earthen lamp in every household in memory of the five martyrs of the current agitation against Citizenship Amendment Act, a sit-in was staged at Gandhi Chowk from 11 am to 4 pm and thereafter silent prayer was observed after lighting of earthen lamps around Mahatma Gandhi’s statue.

In the sit-in, several speakers, including Surajit Moran, president of AJYCP Tinsukia District Committee, Deben Deka, secretary of Doomdooma Sakha Sahitya Sabha, Arjun Baruah, newly-elected president of Tinisukia Zila Xahitya Xabha, Dhiren Deka, president of Assam Science Writers’ Association and other dignitaries addressed the gathering and urged the people to be prepared for a long drawn agitation against Citizenship Amendment Act.

In the evening, Tapan Das, a leading social worker of the Bengali community, took the lead in lighting the earthen lamps which was followed by observance of silent prayers by everybody present there. On Thursday, AJYCP has given a call for observance of ‘Gana Garjan’ (mass uproar) program by the women of Doomdooma and its adjoining area in the morning from 11 am to 4 pm in the same venue of Gandhi Chowk in the heart of the town.
