SIVASAGAR: Sibsagar Natya Samaj, a premier socio-cultural organization of Sivasagar, established in 1899, has been providing opportunities to witness various aspects of Assamese culture through performances of ankiya bhaona. The organization will showcase ankiya bhaona, a 15th-century performing art form, propagated by the great Vaisnavite saint Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev, in New Delhi.

Sibsagar Natya Samaj and Kala Bihar Sangeet Vidyalaya, Sivasagar, in association with ONGC, will stage Rukmini Haran at Sri Ram Centre in New Delhi on April 26. Executive member and chief coordinator of Sibsagar Natya Samaj, Saurav Chaliha told The Sentinel that the opportunity to perform Rukmini Haran ankiya bhaona, the creation of Vaishnavite saint Srimanta Sankardev at the Sri Ram Centre had kindled high enthusiasm in the artistes, most of whom were students.

Chaliha said that the main objective of this event was not only to propagate and spread the traditional Xattriya culture and heritage which Srimanta Sankardev had preached, but also to take it out to the other parts of the country and to encourage the younger generation to practice and carry on this art-form. “In all, 40 artistes, including musicians, will be part of the troupe in New Delhi. All the artistes, especially the performers who are students, have endured tough moments and squeezed out precious time to prepare for this dance drama. Learning from the word ‘go’, they are now at the peak of confidence to show their mettle to the world,” said Chaliha.
