GANGTOK: Local authorities reported on Monday that six tourists from Assam, who had been stranded in North Sikkim due to heavy snowfall, were successfully rescued while traveling on motorcycles. The group had been stranded in the Yakshe area, about 10 kilometers from Lachung in the Mangan district, since Sunday night.

The situation was worsened by the presence of black ice on the roads, which prevented the motorcycles from continuing their journey. As the snowstorm worsened, the tourists became trapped in the severe conditions. In response, police officers, assisted by local residents, organized a rescue operation to bring the stranded tourists to safety.

After the rescue, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) quickly cleared the road to Yumthang Valley by Monday morning, restoring access to the area. Although the route has been cleared, authorities have warned travelers to stay cautious, as black ice still presents a significant danger.

Officials have recommended that tourists check road conditions before starting their journeys and take all necessary safety precautions to avoid accidents, particularly during the winter months when such hazards are common.

Meanwhile, earlier this month, in a valorous rescue operation, personnel of the Trishakti Corps displayed courage and timely action by saving the lives of five tourists whose vehicle tumbled near Kupup as a result of sudden snowfall that occurred in a high-altitude terrain located in the eastern part of Sikkim.

Despite the stiff weather conditions, the brave troops responded quickly and put their own lives at stake to rush to the site of the incident and evacuate the stranded visitors to the nearby Army Post.

The unexpected accident led to some tourists sustaining severe injuries. Essential medical assistance and relief were provided to the injured individuals after they reached the Army post.
