Skill training on vermicompost production held at Sonitpur KVK

TEZPUR: The KVK, Sonitpur organized a six day-long 'Skill Training for Rural Youth' (STRY) on vermicompost production at the Napam campus. The programme was sponsored by National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management (MANAGE),

The programme was inaugurated by Dr Arifa M.Begum, In-Charge Head of KVK, Sonitpur. Dr. Begum welcomed the participants and explained the objectives of the training programme. Dr. Namita Dutta (SMS, Soil science), who was the course director of the training. She dwelt on the recent trend in food production, declining soil health and approaches to manage it.

Krishna Devi, ADO, Bihagutri circle, delivered a lecture on different types of organic inputs such as composts and green manures, their specific benefits on application to soil and their effect on crop growth.

Dr. P.K. Sarmah, Chief Scientist, AICRP-DA, BNCA, derived a lecture on the detailed production technology of vermicompost, both at commercial and farm level. He also discussed about economics related to vermicompost production.

Angana Sharmah, SMS (Horticulture) discussed with the participants about use of organic manures in horticultural crops while Dr. Roji Chutia, SMS (Agronomy) offered a lecture on scientific cultivation practices of some important field crops such as paddy, toria and potato.

The participants were taken on a field trip to Nomol Sharma's vermicompost production unit situated at Bihaguri, Sonitpur. Sharma is a pioneer vermicompost producer of Sonitpur district who started his venture way back in 2014 after obtaining a training imparted by KVK, Sonitpur. Sharma interacted with the participants and discussed about practical know-hows of vermicompost production. The programme concluded with a certificate-distribution ceremony.
