Small Businesses in Demow Facing Problems Due to Market Close in COVID Lockdown

DEMOW: The small businessmen of Demow weekly market held a press meet in Demow Press Club on Wednesday regarding the various problems which they were facing as the weekly markets are closed in Sivasagar district due to the outbreak of COVID-19.

A small businessman said that they used to go to different weekly markets in Sivasagar district from Monday to Sunday and earn their livelihood. But as the weekly markets are closed now due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they were facing serious problems. It has been more than 15 days since the weekly markets have been closed.

There are around 700-800 small businessmen in Demow and more than 1,000 in Thowra constituency. "Shops are allowed to open till 11 am. We appeal to the government and the administration to allow us also to open our stalls till 11 am by maintaining COVID protocol. We are not being able to pay our EMIs and loan installments. We are not being able to provide for our families," said the small businessmen. They submitted an application regarding these problems to the Deputy Commissioner of Sivasagar district through Demow Circle Officer on Wednesday.
