DHUBRI: The 250th birth anniversary of social reformer Raja Ram Mohan Roy was observed in a meeting held under the auspices of Dhubri District Library in collaboration and with financial support from Raja Ram Mohan Roy Library Foundation under the Union Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Development, in the Dhubri District Library Auditorium on Thursday. At the onset of the programme, co-ordinator of Dhubri District Women Empowerment Committee, Meghali Roy offered floral tribute to the portrait of Raja Ram Mohan Roy and marked the beginning of the lecture session by lighting the earthen lamp.

Addressing the hall-packed audience as an appointed speaker, an academician, Chandan Sarma said that Roy was unquestionably an unparalleled person on the subcontinent who seriously engaged with the challenges posed by modernity to traditional social structures and ways of social system.

He was also one of the first Indians whose philosophy and practice were not bounded by the constraints of kin, caste, creed and religion, and he was undoubtedly the father of Modern Indian Renaissance who fought against superstitious beliefs and practices, including Sati which had prevailed during his time, Sarma in keynote address said. The meeting was also addressed by Principal of Dhubri Girls' College, Multafa Begum, lecturer of Philosophy in BN College, Nabinita Devi and Principal of Dr Banikanta Kakati Senior Secondary School of Dhubri, Rabiul Islam. They spoke at length on the life, philosophy, social reform and activities of Raja Ram Mohan Roy, who tirelessly worked for empowerment of women.

Nearly 500 students and women participated in the meeting and awareness procession, which was taken out from the gate of Dhubri DC office and ended at the Dhubri District Library premises.
