Guwahati: Amid a massive spike in the number of Covid-19 cases, the Sonapur District Hospital is Assam has been readied up to treat virus cases which has been readied and 108 beds have been set up.

Assam Finance and Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the hospital earlier today and supervised the shifting of the first nine patients who will be treated in the facility. This new facility is expected to further boost the state as it attempts to curb the spread of the Covid-19 virus that has wreaked havoc across the world.

In Assam, the return of citizens who were stranded amid the lockdown has resulted in a massive surge in the cases of coronavirus. Sarma has informed mediapersons that over one lakh people have returned to the state after the easing of restrictions, and another one lakh persons are on the way to Assam. However, Sarma opined, the number of incoming citizens is all set to dwindle in the near future as returnees have to deal with the challenge of quarantine, now mandated for all.

Meanwhile, Assam has reported 714 cases of the coronavirus, out of which 645 are active. Earlier, a total of 62 COVID19 patients were discharged from various hospitals across the state after their complete recovery from the disease. The deadly disease has so far claimed the lives of 4 persons in Assam while 3 cases migrated.
