Sonitpur district administration holds sensitization workshops on Novel Coronavirus

Tezpur: The Sonitpur district administration and District Health Society, Sonitpur organized a series of workshops for various stakeholders on Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) in the conference hall of the Deputy Commissioner’s office on Wednesday to sensitize and create awareness and in order to check the spread of this disease.

Chairing the workshop for medical officers and workers from various government and private health institutions from the district, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Health) Kulen Sarma said the district administration was taking all steps necessary to prevent the spread of the disease and directed all health officials present to follow the advisories and Standard Operational Procedures as received from the government and implement them with earnest.

District Epidemiologist, IDSP, Dr. Subhalaxmi Bora, spoke about the symptoms associated with the disease along with steps initiated by the health department, including fever surveillance and screening of suspected cases. She also informed that as part of the preparatory measures, isolation wards had been set up both at Tezpur Medical College and Hospital and at Kanaklata Civil Hospital, Tezpur. An emergency helpline 03712-241308 has been set up at TMCH for the purpose. A control room has also been set up by Sonitpur district administration at 94353-71672 where people will be able to report and bring any such case to the notice of the district administration.

Dr. Samrat Biswas, Assistant Professor, Department of Microbiology, TMCH was present as a resource person on the occasion. Moreover, a medical team led by the Joint Director of Health Services, Dr. Krishna Kemprai visited Tezpur Airport and sensitized the staff of the airport about the disease in the presence of Airport Director, RN Singh.

A second workshop for the hospitality sector and educational and research institutes of Sonitpur district was also held on Wednesday where the owners and proprietors of hotels and lodges along with representatives of various prominent educational institutions were told about the various steps taken by the district administration to check the spread of the disease. They were also told about the precautionary measures to be taken in case of tourists/ delegates who may have traveled to countries affected by the disease or came in contact with people from these countries. If any suspected case if detected, necessary steps will be taken to collect the patient’s samples and sent to NIV, Pune for testing.

Moreover, a press meet was also held later in the day to create awareness among media persons of the district about the disease. They were also informed about the preventive measures taken by the district administration to screen any suspected case in the district.
