TEZPUR: Hundreds of members of the Sonitpur Zila Congress party of Tezpur Chapter staged a dharna on Tuesday in the front of the Assistant Labour Commissioner's office under the leadership of senior Congress leader Madhurjya Goswami.

The Congress activists said that tea garden workers' unions had been demanding a hike in daily wages of tea garden labourers to Rs. 351 and they had appealed to the authority concerned several times but their demands fell into deaf ears. Both the Centre and State Government do not think about the welfare of the tea workers' community and only use them as vote bank, alleged the Congress activists.
