Guwahati: Bollywood actor Sonu Sood's efforts to repatriate migrants who were stuck amid the coronavirus-triggered lockdown, has now earned the praise of Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who conferred high praise.

So why did the Assam Chief Minister, whose closest proximity to Bollywood came when his state hosted the 2020 Filmfare awards, lauding Sood, one might ask? Well, Sonowal offered his praises after it came to light that the actor had arranged a special flight to ferry Assam migrants who were stranded in Mumbai back to their place of origin, Siilchar in Barak Valley.

"Apart from being a great actor, Shri Sonu Sood is a great human being and a good samaritan to those in need. I convey my heartfelt thanks for arranging a flight to ferry 180 migrants of Assam stuck in Mumbai to Silchar. Kudos for your gesture", Sonowal Tweeted.

In May 2020, during the nationwide lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Sood helped thousands of stranded Indian migrant workers to reach their homes throughout India by arranging buses, special trains and chartered flights for them.

"Till the Last Migrant Reaches his Home":

The actor, who is widely known for assaying baddies in mega-blockbuster Bollywood films such as Dabangg, has become the stuff of folklore for his tireless activity to send the migrants, suffering amid the lockdown due to the economic downturn, back home. The best part about this is that Sood claims that his acts of kindness do not have any political motive.

"I have nothing to do with politics. I am doing this purely out of my love for migrants. I want to help reunite them with their families," Sood said in a recent interview. He estimates that he has helped 18,000-20,000 workers to go back to their homes in states such as Odisha, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand. "I intend to work till the last migrant reaches his home. The journey has to continue in full force. No one should be rendered homeless. We want them to reach home safely," Sood added.
