DIBRUGARH: In continuation of the centenary celebration of State Bank of India, Dibrugarh, a souvenir titled ‘Syamantak’ was formally released on Saturday at a á ceremony held in SBI Dibrugarh branch. A dream envisioned by the lion man of Assam, RG Baruah, in the form of the first financial institution of North eastern region of India, Imperial Bank was established in Dibrugarh in May 1,1923. Radha Govinda Baruah was the promoter and first Indian employee of the bank which was later rechristened as State Bank of India after independence.
Eminent author and former president of Axom Xahitya Xabha, Prof. Nagen Saikia graced the occasion as the chief guest. In his address, he talked about positive correlation of role of a financial institution like SBI and released a magazine on the auspicious day of Laxmi Puja.
Dr Sashi Kanta Saikia Principal of the DHS Kanoi College, here while attending the meeting formally released the magazine and addressed the audience with an inspirational speech. Regional Manager of SBI Niraj Kumar Sah, AGM of Administrative Office KK Kutum and journalist Sarat Chandra Neog were among the dignitaries present at the occasion.
The meeting was gracefully moderated by retired DGS of SBISA and member of editorial board Jnan Prakash Sarmah and vote of thanks was offered by present chief manager Sunil Prasad.
The bilingual magazine which was named ‘Syamantak’ by Prof. Nagen Saikia showcases the glorious past of Dibrugarh town and State Bank of India. Edited by an in-house team of past and present employees of SBI, Anshuman Bordoloi, Chief Manager of SBI is the Chief Editor. The souvenir is a compendium of several articles about how banking system has begun and proliferated over the century.
