KALIABAR: Given the surge in the number of COVID-19 cases in the tea gardens, and as advised by State Health Minister Keshab Mahanta, an awareness-and-sanitization programme was organized in the tea garden areas of Kellyden Tea Estate within Kaliabar subdivision on Wednesday.

It was held under the supervision of Special Member of the Medical Advisory Board for Plantation Workers, Government of Assam & Medical Inspector of Plantations Tezpur, in charge of Nagaon, Dr Pradip Kumar Lahkar, and with support of the PHE (Public Health Engineering) department on Tuesday.

The programme was inaugurated by Dr Lahkar in the presence of senior managers Raj Sekhar Dutta and Sanjib Sarma, doctors, welfare officers, workers and representatives of tea gardens in Kaliabor sub-division.

Stressing the need to create utmost awareness among the public regarding the COVID-appropriate behaviour, Dr Lahkar underlined the need to ensure that physical distance is strictly maintained. He also said that the processes of sanitization and vaccination must be monitored.

Dr Lahkar further laid stress on conducting Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs) widely to detect COVID-19 patients among the garden employees and to take all precautionary measures as per the COVID-19 protocols. He also directed the officials concerned to involve the workers' union and students' organization to motivate the garden population for vaccination.

Dr Lahkar also urged the public to extend their cooperation by creating extensive mass awareness in order to make the vaccination drive successful. He appealed to all to come out and get themselves vaccinated during this mega 'Vaccination Camp', adding that vaccination is the only way to defeat the threat of COVID-19. He also said that sanitization programmes will be carried on in the tea estates within the district as precautionary measures against the pandemic. He expressed his thanks to the management for their efforts in this aspect.

As of now, the COVID situation across the tea estates within Kaliabar subdivision is under control.
