Spike In Violence Leaves Medical Fraternity Disillusioned

Dibrugarh: The recent rise in the spate of unwarranted violence against doctors has been a matter of great concern among the medical fraternity, especially doctors. The doctors, all across the State, have come out in large numbers to protest against this spike in violence in general and the recent beastly and cold-blooded murder of Dr. Deben Dutta at Teok Tea Estate in particular.

In such an environment of anger, insecurity and dread among the medicos as a result of the status-quo, The Sentinel got in touch with a couple of people from the medical fraternity. Dr. Rajib Saikia of Indian Oil Corporation Limited, Digboi, expressed shock and dismay over the matter in hand and observed, “Has the life of a doctor become so insignificant? After all the hard work, altruism and endless sacrifices, does a doctor deserve to die such an inhumane death? If such gruesome incidents continue unabated, doctors very soon will be bound to wonder if they entered the wrong profession as well as if it is worth it to serve in the hinterland. What pains me the most, however, is the near unresponsiveness of the civil society against such barbarous show of brute force against the ones who go out of their way to help the needy and the anguished.”

Dr. Swati Singh, PGT Department of Psychiatry, Assam Medical College and Hospitals, observed, “The recent incidents raise serious concerns about the safety of doctors all across the country. Undoubtedly, it gives me a sense of insecurity and fear thinking if I’ll meet the same fate someday, which in turn affects my peace of mind during the duty hours. I believe putting enhanced security measures in place is the need of the hour. Also, the media can help generate awareness about the legal implications of such crimes, which might act as a deterrent against such out-and-out brazenness and savagery.”
