GUWAHATI: In a major crackdown on cross-border ecological crime, the 6th Battalion of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) intercepted a smuggling operation of timber successfully on April 12.
The operation was jointly carried out with the Forest Department and was in the Ambari forest region, situated around 4.5 kilometers from Border Pillar No. 170/1, marking the India-Bhutan border.
Acting on reliable intelligence, SSB personnel of the Dadgiri border outpost and officials of Devashri Forest Division established a surprise checkpost in Indian territory. Their efforts paid off when they noticed smugglers with illegally cut timber in a tractor-trolley.
As soon as they saw the enforcement team approaching, the suspects abandoned the vehicle and ran into the forest, escaping immediate arrest. The security agencies managed to arrest the tractor-trolley and the illicit timber, preventing the attempt at smuggling from progressing further.
The seized wood and the vehicle were then handed over to the Devashri Forest Department for legal action and further investigation. The operation demonstrates the SSB's commitment towards border security and environmental protection, given that regular patrols and intelligence-based operations are still necessary in the fight against illegal logging operations and the maintenance of the ecological balance in India's forested border areas.
