HAFLONG: The Sixth Schedule Protection Committee (SSPC) held a press conference today, where they addressed the issues discussed during a meeting held on February 11 in Guwahati.

The meeting, convened by the Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly, focused on the socio-economic development of Sixth Schedule areas. The Speaker had hoped for greater participation from stakeholders to ensure better understanding of the challenges before the upcoming Budget Session in Kokrajhar.

However, the press conference highlighted that the participation in the February 11 meeting was low, with minimal representatives from Sixth Schedule areas. The SSPC expressed concern over this lack of involvement, emphasizing the need for collaborative discussions to address the challenges faced by Autonomous Councils in Assam.

Key issues raised by the SSPC included opposition to the 125th Constitution Amendment Bill, a demand for direct release of funds from the Central Finance Commission to Autonomous Councils, and the creation of a new bill considering suggestions from previous discussions.

They also called for increased administrative authority for MACs, reinstatement of the MAC pension fund, and improved road maintenance. Other issues included disruptions to local farmers caused by the Central Bushu Dima celebration in Maibang and pending law and order cases in the region. The SSPC urged the Assam government to address these concerns promptly.
