Steps for women’s empowerment through financial inclusion initiated: Goalpara DC Varnali Deka

Goalpara: Goalpara Deputy Commissioner Varnali Deka shared her experience in handling women’s economic empowerment in Goalpara district in a prestigious seminar held in New Delhi by the NITI Ayog and Microsave Consulting. She participated as one of the seven elite panelists in the event ‘Enhancing women’s economic empowerment through financial inclusion’.

Around the world, women’s economic empowerment has been a mainstay for practitioners to enable gender equality. Financial inclusion has been identified as a key opportunity to enable women’s economic empowerment. However, despite intent and rigor from practitioners and donors, women’s financial inclusion remains a sad story. The challenge runs deeper in the context of aspirational districts, with 112 districts still performing poorly in the development index.

In this context, NITI Aayog, BMGF, and MSC organized the event to deliberate upon policy and product recommendations that the government and financial services industry can adopt to work towards greater financial health of women. The Goalpara Deputy Commissioner was invited because Goalpara consistently performed well in the financial inclusion thematic area amongst the 112 aspirational districts.

Besides Varnali Deka, the other panelists were Graham A N Wright (moderator), Alka Upadhyay, NRLM, Anindita Sinha Ray, Ministry of Finance, Jayshree Vyas, SEWA Bank, Dr. Humaira Islam, Shakti Foundation Bangladesh and Shameran, BRAC, Bangladesh.
