Stolen arms and ammunition recovered, two arrested in Sonitpur district

TEZPUR: A massive search operation was launched in the areas of Bagariguri, Somlaiguri, Kuchiguri and Amlaiguri in Sonai Rupai National Sanctuary on September 24 after miscreants stole two 303 rifles with ammunition from the 24 km Anti-Poaching Forest Camp, Amlaiguri under Misamari Police Station in Sonitpur district.

Acting on tip-off, Sonitpur Police, in collaboration with 2nd Assam Forest Protection Force, 30 CRPF Bn and AISF Bn, carried out a special operation in the deep forest areas for the recovery of the arms and ammunition. The operation was led by Numal Mahatta, Additional SP (HQ), Dr Rashmi Rekha Sarmah, DSP (HQ), Bibhuti Mazumdar, Range Forest Officer, Kalamati Forest Range and SI, Joy Sanker Wary, OC Missamari PS, under supervision of Superintendent of Police of Sonitpur Mugdhajyoti Dev Mahanta.

During this operation, on Friday the stolen arms and ammunition were recovered from the nearby jungle of 24 km Anti-Poaching Camp and duly seized in connection with Missamari PS case no 86/ 20 U/S 380 IPC. In the course of investigation, two persons were arrested and forwarded to judicial custody. The apprehended persons were identified as Pramod Nath of Bihaguri village in Sonitpur district and Biswajit Rai in Chirang district.
