Storm Blows Roof Off New Classroom, Public Alleges Use of Inferior Quality Materials

RANGIYA: The roof being blown off from a newly constructed classroom in the Jawaharlal Nehru Sishu Vidyalaya in Rangia even before it was opened for regular classes has left the locals angry and they alleged corruption to be the reason for the incident.

A storm passed over the Rangia region of the state on the morning of Saturday and it caused massive damage to the newly constructed classroom of the Jawaharlal Nehru Sishu Vidyalaya. While part of the roof made using galvanised iron sheets was blown off, part of the ceiling also came down.

People alleged use of inferior quality materials and untrained workers were used during the construction leading to the problem. The construction project had incurred a total cost of Rs 18 Lakhs and was due inauguration a day later.

People also questioned what could have happened if the same incident had taken place while a class was going on. And said that the contractors who undertook the project had put the very lives of the children attending the classes in that school at risk.

The teachers of the school mentioned that complaints had been raised several times highlighting the inferior quality of the materials in use during the construction process, but no heed was paid to the same and contractor Manas Bezbaruah continued as he pleased. They demanded a proper enquiry into the matter and also complete reconstruction of the classrooms and just repairs. They also demanded that concerned parties be punished if found guilty in the enquiry.

It is important to note that the school comes under the Rangiya Constituency which is represented by the state president of the Bharatiya Janata Party in the Assam state assembly and it remains to see what action is being taken by the administration with regard to this incident.
