Storm & heavy rain lash Jorhat areas

JORHAT: Heavy thunderstorm and rain crippled normal life in Jorhat district on Monday. A storm accompanied by rain lashed the district at the speed of 40 to 50 km/hour between 10 am to 11 am. CI sheets, trees and electric posts were uprooted while several rickshaws on the road were carried away by the storm.

The authority of Crescent Academy, a junior college in Jorhat city, declared a 10-day holiday after a big branch of tree fell on the third floor of the educational institute. The students had a narrow escape. In another incident, a huge banyan tree fell on the roof of an RCC building. Five members of a family had a narrow escape. Four houses were damaged when a banyan tree got uprooted by the storm and fell in the campus of Barooah and Associates in Lichubari-Sadar Road. Six members of a family narrowly escaped where they ran out of their houses.

Some of the worst affected places were the campus of Jorhat Military Station, the Deputy Commissioner’s residential campus where three trees got uprooted and the Judicial Magistrate officers’ residential campus.

As tree branches have fallen on electric wires and cables and electric poles have been uprooted, power supply has been disrupted in Jorhat city. Due to heavy downpour, forest and APDCL officials are having a harrowing time clearing the blocked roads. So it may take some time for the power supply to be restored.

A woman was injured and a youth died after being hit by lightning in Jorhat city on Monday morning. The deceased has been identified as Devojit Das (22) from Goromur while the woman has been identified as Gita Ghose from Lichubari Colony. She is undergoing treatment at Jorhat Medical College and Hospital, said sources.
