Stress laid on checking paid news in ensuing Parliamentary election

LAKHIMPUR: A crucial meet of the district level Media Certification and Monitoring Committee (MCMC) for Lakhimpur Election district was held on Friday in the presence of the media persons of the district. The meet was organized in the conference hall of the Lakhimpur Zila Parishad office in a view to ensuing Parliamentary election.

The event laid stress on strengthening of the democracy of India by checking the ‘paid news’ which misleads the public causing influence on voters and affecting their right to information. In this regard, Assistant Returning Officer (ARO) of Lakhimpur cum member of the MCMC, Pradip Kumar Doley made an detailed discussion with power point presentation on paid news as per the guidelines issued by the Election Commission of India (ECI).

In his discussion, he threw light on the definition of paid news presented by Press Council of India, the adverse effects of paid news, measures taken by ECI to check paid news on election arena, the mechanism made by the ECI to curb the paid news, role of MCMC, media certification along with some other related topics. Members of the MCMC, ADC Bipul Kumar Das, District Information and Public Relation Officer Mandira Chayengiya, journalist Ranjit Kakati, senior citizens Hiranya Kumar Duwarah also took part in the programme which got an effective tone with the cordial interaction with the journalists present.

Prior to this, the ARO held a meeting with the representatives of the political parties of the district at the same venue with a view to ensuring the execution of the Model Code of Conduct in the district. On the other hand, information officer Mithun Mukharji made a power point presentation on Suvidha App portal, launched by the ECI for the permission for any event without having to visit district administration office.
