Student bodies of Demow flay police ‘inaction’ on college student attack case

DEMOW: An incident which took place on August 14 where Smiti Rekha Phukan allegedly hit Priya Das, who is studying in Demow College in Demow Chariali. As a result, Priya Das was seriously injured. To demand the arrest of Smiti Rekha Phukan, Priya Das’ father, Demow College Students’ Union and five oganizations of Demow lodged an FIR and they even staged protest. However, Demow Police has not yet arrested the woman. Demow College Students’ Union, Demow Regional Students’ Union, Demow Regional Tai Ahom Students’ Union, Brihattar Asomiya Yuba Mancha, Demow Town Committee, Demow Branch All Tea Tribes Students’ Association and Demow Regional Adivasi Students’ Association have expressed serious concern over this.

In a press release, the leaders of the organizations stated that the BJP-led Central Government talked about ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ but it was unfortunate that the principal along with the authorities of the college had not talked to the Priya Das’ family since the incident. To demand justice for Priya Das, these organizations will take up ‘Demow Police Station gherao’ programme on August 23.
