Student bodies stage rail blockade against Citizenship Bill at Sarupathar railway station

SARUPATHAR: Activists of Chutia Students’ Union, Satra Mukti Sangram Samiti (SMSS) and various students’ union of Dhansiri subdivision staged a rail blockade at Sarupathar railway station on Friday.

Hundreds of activists staged a massive protest in front of the 15910 Avadh-Assam Express on the railway tracks of Sarupathar to protest against the Centre’s proposed Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016. The activists shouted various slogans and demanded scrapping of the bill.

State secretary Mohen Bora of Chutia Students’ Union and State secretary Bidyut Saikia of SMSS were also present in the protest. The activists demanded immediate withdrawal of the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 and also demanded an immediate release of the three student leaders which are in the district jail of Golaghat.

Meanwhile, the three student leaders started an indefinite hunger strike inside the district jail on Friday demanding scrapping of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016. The student leaders were arrested on Tuesday for allegedly vandalizing the BJP’s Golaghat district office.
